CMDE Assessments

A Comprehensive Multi-Disciplinary Evaluation (CMDE) is the first step toward EIDBI services for children across Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey, Washington, Scott, Dakota and Carver counties. It’s how we determine medical necessity and build a plan of care that actually fits your child.
What Is a CMDE?

The foundation for every EIDBI treatment plan

A CMDE is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary evaluation used to determine whether a child has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or a related condition, and whether EIDBI services are medically necessary. It’s required for EIDBI-funded services, specifically ABA Therapy. Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy are provided through Kids Care Inc.’s contracted partner agency and follow their own separate evaluation process.
What the evaluation covers
Developmental History
Clinical interviews with family to understand your child’s history and current needs.
Behavioral Observation
Direct observation of your child’s behavior, communication, and social interaction.
Standardized Testing
Evidence-based tools used to assess cognitive, adaptive, and social-communication skills.
Record Review
A review of existing medical, developmental, and educational records where available.
How the process works
1
Referral
Anyone — a parent, care coordinator, school professional, or pediatrician — can refer a child for a CMDE. If your child already has an existing, unexpired CMDE on file, we can skip directly to building the Individual Treatment Plan.
2
Evaluation
Our team conducts the multi-disciplinary evaluation across one or more sessions.
3
Findings & Diagnosis
We compile a report documenting medical necessity and any diagnosis.
4
Individual Treatment Plan
If eligible, we build an ITP tailored to your child’s specific needs and goals.
What you’ll need
Before we can schedule your child’s CMDE, we’ll need a copy of their diagnosis (if one exists) and recent health records. Our team will let you know if any additional documentation is required for your child’s specific situation.
Is This Right For My Child?

Has a suspected or existing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis that needs to be formally established
Is enrolled in Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare, TEFRA, or another qualifying Minnesota Health Care Program
Is younger than 21 years old and lives within our service area
